I've never had what most people call a "dream". All my dreams have been nightmares, each and every night of my life. All of my life, from early childhood to the present day. At best, they're scary and inexplicable carnivals of confusion. Being lost and losing people in crowds. Not being able to find my car or my way home.
At their worst, they're horrifying. Running from people with guns and weapons, hiding in basements, being eaten alive by a tiger and feeling the pain, running, hiding, always alone. Always. Without exception, I have one to four dreams each time I fall asleep. Every night. Every nap.
It's no way to live when sleeping is a third of our lives. But I'm eternally optimistic. It's the only way to be when living is all you have.
